Taxing Content Creators
Yurie Jiyūbō
While I’m still fighting my endless war with SEO and indexing, here’s some food for thought.
I’ve been obsessed with the tax game lately, and honestly? It’s wild. Every country has its own rules, but they all have one thing in common: they want a piece of your "content creator" cake.
Here’s the deal: You post your photos or whatever you create, fans buy it, the platform takes its 20% cut, and you withdraw the rest to your card. Simple, right? But then some governments start lurking, monitoring your bank transfers, and sliding into your DMs with threats about "tax evasion."
But like... what exactly are we paying for? Let’s break it down:
I bought my laptop and camera with my own cash to start this hustle. Paid VAT. I work from my apartment, paying for electricity and Wi-Fi. Paid VAT again. I buy snacks at the store to keep my brain running. Surprise, VAT included. If I get sick, I pay the doctor and the pharmacy. VAT, VAT, VAT.
Basically, I’m a self-sufficient ecosystem. I can’t breathe or buy a grape without paying taxes. And don't even get me started on road tolls, income tax, and all those other "DLCs" the government forces on us.
I’m already paying a subscription fee just for being in the country. Then, I finally get a payout from a platform—where the state did zero work—and they want another cut. I bought the gear, I paid the bills, I fed myself. Where was the state when I was grinding? Nowhere.
So, to earn this money, I’ve already paid VAT like five times, and now I have to pay again just because... why? Because they can? 🤷♀️
A good question, isn't it?
I know, I know—there’s probably some "pro move" like registering as a business or a freelancer to write off expenses. But I bet that procedure is a massive headache that requires a paid consultant just to understand the paperwork.
And the best part? Where does the money even go? Everything is still paid out of pocket anyway, right?
Am I being too dramatic, or is this system actually glitched? Let me know in the comments what you think!
